Whole 30 – Day 50

29 Nov

I think it’s about time for a Whole30 update!  I’m officially half way through my second Whole30.  It pretty much just feels normal at this point to eat this way.  I still miss some things but only when they are right in front of my face.  Otherwise I’m happy to eat my “real” food.

I haven’t been measuring myself at all but the scale is pretty much hanging right where it’s been for weeks.  I feel like until my thyroid issue gets treated with medication that isn’t going to change and as much as I may dislike my fluffier body I’ve learned to live with it for now.  No sense in hating yourself over something you can’t control.  Obviously I’m doing everything I can to change it food/diet wise and it’s just not happening.

I’ve been lucky enough to have been on vacation (days off really, I didn’t go anywhere) for the last 10 days.  Tonight I’m back to work.  I feel like I have slightly more energy than I have had, but I think a lot of that is due to not being at work and being stressed out at work.  I’ve also been sleeping at night for the most part and that really does make a difference. Hopefully I can keep this energy level up!

I feel like I’m ready to start working out now.  I’m not sure how my body is going to react but I’m going to give it a try.  I started doing some YouTube yoga which I’ve really like.  It seriously kicks my butt though.  I’ve been doing the 30 Days of Yoga on the Yoga with Adriene channel.  I haven’t done it every day but I have enjoyed it when I have done it.  It’s nothing crazy and is for beginners for sure.

What I’m really excited to start is the New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess workout.  It’s a seven phase workout for lifting heavy.  I know building muscle on my body will help ramp up my metabolism and will help shed some excess fat.  You can find the book on Amazon here.  I’ve read that some people get bored with the workouts but I like that it’s all written down exactly what I need to do and I don’t have to be creative about it.  I could change my mind but for now this is what I’m going to try.  I have to do my best to make it to the gym three times a week which is a struggle for me, but they say even twice when you start out is okay.

The other crazy thing I’ve done is to cut out caffeine, like completely.  I never thought that would be something I would do.  I love my morning coffee.  I don’t even think it was the caffeine doing anything for me but I just like the way it tastes.  I decided to stop drinking caffeine because I’ve done so much reading on how it can negatively impact your body and pretty much everything I have wrong with me caffeine makes worse.  So it was a hard decision but an obvious one to make in my mind.  It’s been 12 days so far and I have to say I don’t feel any different, no better or worse.  I didn’t even notice caffeine withdrawals which I thought was weird because I did drink at least one large cup of coffee a day and usually several cups of caffeinated tea.

My morning just wouldn’t be complete without having something warm to drink though.  I’ve been listening to The Nourished Podcast by Meg Doll and Shawn Mynar.  I love these ladies!  They have both been through things similar to what I’m dealing with, and probably even worse than me.  They are both certified holistic nutritionists and they have a lot of really good info on your body (especially for women).  I just love listening to them.  Anyway, Meg talks about what she drinks in the morning which is half a lemon squeezed into your mug, sea salt, and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (Braggs or anything with the mother still in it) and hot water.  I think the sour kick of the drink wakes me up as much as the caffeine used to.  It’s also supposed to help create more stomach acid, which most people are lacking with the way we eat now (processed foods).  Symptoms of low stomach acid include the following:

  • Bloating, belching, and flatulence immediately after meals
  • Heartburn (often thought to be caused by too much stomach acid)
  • Indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Undigested food in stools
  • Acne
  • Rectal itching
  • Chronic candida
  • Hair loss in women
  • Multiple food allergies
  • Iron deficiency
  • Weak, peeling, or cracked fingernails
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Various autoimmune diseases

I was shocked when I learned this because I have about eight of the things on the list.  What’s really crazy to me is that I don’t have heartburn, I’ve never had it in my life.  But I guess you don’t always have that with low stomach acid.  By not having enough stomach acid your body doesn’t process proteins well nor does it absorb the nutrients from the foods you eat.  It’s amazing to me because I’ve found so many possible answers to the problems I have.  When they say everything in your body is tied together they aren’t kidding.

So I know that was a long update.  If you’ve made it this far, congratulations!  This is what happens when I don’t write every day.  I have a lot to say apparently!

I’m still working on making myself better.  No new doctor’s appointments until January.  I’m really hoping for the most amazing 2016.

Whole30 – Day 28

8 Nov

I can’t believe I haven’t eaten any junk in 28 days!  If you know me and my sweet tooth that’s amazing all in itself.

I managed to get my shopping done today and tonight is cooking night!  I have some new recipes to try and I can’t wait because one of them is Pad Thai, one of my favorite dishes in the universe.  When I first started out on this journey grocery shopping took me forever but now I’m finding it to be a breeze.  I still don’t like what the cash register total comes to but I guess I’m getting more used to it.  Every week seems to be roughly the same, about $115 in groceries.  I know I could cut down some costs, but I do buy grass fed beef and free range chicken, no added hormones/antibiotics, and that’s worth a few extra dollars.  I could also shop what’s on sale but I’ll be honest, I’m not there in my cooking yet.  Right now I sit down and look through recipes, or I find something during the week, that looks good and that’s what I make.  Maybe one of these days I’ll focus more on eating this way on a bit of a budget.  One thing at a time I suppose.

Breakfast

Spinach, zoodles, poached eggs, and almond butter!  Yes I ate it straight out of the container, but no I did not eat the whole thing.  I ran out of avocados and needed some fats so almond butter sounded like a good way to get it in.  If you’ve never tried the machine that grinds it fresh for you, you really should.  It’s is so much yummier than any pre-packaged almond butter I’ve ever tried.  It’s good enough I probably could eat the entire container if I didn’t have a little self-control.

Lunch

Chili topped with ranch dressing.  In my mind this was an awesome combo.  In my mouth, not quite so awesome.  It wasn’t too horrible to eat but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Dinner

Seriously one of my new favorite dishes.  Chicken and Gravy by Nom Nom Paleo with mashed sweet potatoes, topped with clarified butter and LOTS of gravy!

As you know I don’t usually write my blog this late at night, but I slept and slept and slept today!  It’s my day off and clearly my body was telling me I needed it.  Hopefully my body was doing some much needed repairs during that sleep.

Did you forget?  Only three days until I announce my results and the giveaway details!

Whole30 – Day 23

2 Nov

It’s day 23 already!  I actually feel like I missed a day yesterday but between all the switching back and forth from graveyard to day shift and back to graveyard there was a lot of sleeping done yesterday and not a whole lot of eating….so yeah, day 23 is what I’m calling it.

Speaking of a lot of sleep.  I wasn’t kidding.  I slept 12 glorious hours…and I still woke up tired and dragged ass all night long.  How is that even possible?  I have no idea but I’m finally going to get my blood work results tomorrow morning after work.  I’m excited, anxious, and a bit nervous.  I’m hoping the news isn’t too terrible and that I’ll hopefully be started on some medication to help me feel better than I do right now.  But, I don’t always get what I expect when I go to the doctor so I’ll wait until after my appointment to count my chickens.

Breakfast

Breakfast was my favorite again.  Crack slaw, spinach, poached eggs, and avocado.  It doesn’t get much better than this!

IMG_8280

Lunch

I tried my beef chili for the first time.  It was really good.  The spices are just right.  Even G ate some and didn’t die from the lack of preservatives and sugars so I call it a win.  He did suggest I add green beans next time so I might give that a go.  I also had some roasted vegetables.  This has to be my biggest flop yet.  I’m not sure what went wrong but they really are not good.  I guess I’ll eat them because I don’t have a choice, unless I decide to cook something else.  I’ll see if I can push through.  Even the ranch didn’t save them but I was able to choke it all down.  The sweet potatoes are pictured but I ended up not bringing them to work because it just looked like too much food, and it was, even without the potatoes.

IMG_8281

Dinner

I ate some of the chicken curry.  You can call me crazy but I really like the green olives added to it.  They add a nice salty tangy bite to the dish.  I also had a persimmon and a glass of bone broth.  Bone broth is not my favorite thing to drink but they say the health benefits, especially for those having gut problems, is huge.  So I’m giving it a go and hoping it’ll help repair my system even faster than I assume it has been up to this point.

I’m not going to lie, I’m looking forward to my technical Whole30 being over because finding time to write my blog every day is pretty time consuming, especially when you consider I’m actually cooking my meals on a daily basis.  Both very new things for me but I’m making it work so far.  I have decided to do a fun giveaway which will be announced on my day 31, progress update post so stay tuned for that!

Whole30 – Day 14

24 Oct

I’m running so far behind today but that’s okay since it’s my weekend!  I’ve been staying awake during the night (my normal work hours) and last night I spent more of the night asleep on the floor next to my dogs cuddled up by the fire than I did awake and productive.  And you know what?  That’s totally alright by me.  I did only get four hours of sleep the day before since I had things to get up and do so I was tired, but Whole30 stresses to take naps and rest as much as possible while your body adjusts.  I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not good at this.  I never have time for naps and I don’t always get enough sleep due to work schedules and other appointments I have to get in.  So I listened to my body and slept.

I managed to get my shopping done this morning for my weekly cooking session tonight.  I don’t know if I’m getting lazier as time goes on or if it’s that I’m getting smarter?  Maybe a bit of both.  I currently have a three ingredient kalua pig in my crockpot.  Hopefully it tastes great because it couldn’t be easier.  In case you’re interested in the recipe it’s at Nom Nom Paleo – Slow Cooker Kalua Pig  I can’t attest to it being delicious yet but I have faith in Nom Nom Paleo.

Breakfast

I’m finishing up my food for the week with a bit more leftovers than I had the week before.  Either I ate less or I made more.  Could be either one for sure.  Breakfast was crack slaw and two poached eggs and a sliced fuji apple with almond butter!  So yummy!

IMG_8177

Lunch

I guess I must have forgotten to take a picture of my lunch today and I don’t even remember what I had.  Weird.  I couldn’t even say for sure I actually ate lunch.  Maybe I was abducted?

Dinner

I do know what I had for dinner since it was minutes ago, lol.  I warmed up some of the spinach and tomato frittata and the green beans with mushrooms.  I also decided to try a fruit I had only had once before in my life, and HATED at the time.  But I like to give things a second chance.  I picked up some Fuju persimmons.  I didn’t know until I looked it up online but there are two type of persimmons, a sweet one and an astringent one.  I must have tried the astringent one the first time because it dried my mouth out like I had stuffed it full of cotton.  Luckily these Fuju persimmons are sweet even when they aren’t fully ripe, which mine are not yet.  So I sliced it up and gave it a try.  You know what?  It’s pretty damn good!  These are supposed to be bursting with vitamins and other healthy stuff so that’s a bonus too.  One blog I read said to sprinkle cinnamon on them and that fits into my Whole30 so I think I’ll give that a try next time.

IMG_8180 IMG_8181

I learned the hard way today that Costco is not a good place to be when you are hungry.  They were giving away samples (full fun-size packs) of halloween candy today!  What the hell?  Of course that’s the day I go.  It looked so good too.  On top of that I actually bought halloween candy for the trick-or-treaters since I won’t have a chance to otherwise.  It’ll be my first year in years handing out candy and also my first year ever not eating any (not even one piece) of halloween candy.  I’m actually kinda sad about that one.

I picked up some other fun stuff on my shopping excursion too.  I purchased a Misto, or something like that.  You fill it with your choice of oil and it sprays the oil without added chemicals.  I also bought a different spiralizer so I can make zucchini noodles (zoodles) easier.  I already had a hand-held one but it was a pain in the ass to use.  I’m looking forward to using my new gadgets and making some new foods tonight!

Whole30 – Day 9

19 Oct

I woke up actually feeling awake.  I’m sure that had something to do with the fact I actually got nine hours of sleep. I’ve noticed that when I’m asleep now I actually am totally out of it which hasn’t always been the case.  I forgot to put my phone on “do not disturb” mode today and got a phone call during the middle of my sleep.  I even got up to use the restroom and actually fell right back to sleep.  That never used to happen.  I would have been awake playing on my phone for the better part of an hour until I felt tired again and I may or may not have fallen back to sleep.  Today my head hit the pillow, even the second time, and I was out.  I think part of this is because I started wearing ear plugs and an eye mask (I sleep during the day) but also because of Whole30.

The book mentions having dreams about off-limits foods.  I guess my subconscious really wanted a soda today because I dreamed I had taken a sip, I could even feel the bubbles on my tongue.  In my dream I hadn’t thought about the soda right away then a short time later I was freaking out because I knew I had to start my 30 days over for one little sip of soda.  I woke up not even sure it was a dream at first, lol.

Breakfast

For breakfast I had a plate of spaghetti squash topped with three poached eggs (since it was my only source of protein for the meal) and about two tablespoons of home made mayo, topped with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and salt and pepper.  I was a little concerned about the mayo but it blended nicely with the other flavors and I still met my fat quota.  I’ve always been a pretty low-fat eater so incorporating fats has been difficult for me.

IMG_8112

Lunch

I packed half a stuffed acorn squash and a sliced apple with almond butter for lunch.  I don’t think I’ve ever had acorn squash before today and I actually did like it.  My mom told me that when I was little, still eating baby food, squash was my favorite.  I guess some things never change.  The meat stuffing of the squash reminded me of Thanksgiving stuffing, I think because of the rosemary spice.  It was delicious!

IMG_8113

Dinner

Dinner was crack slaw topped with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, sautéed green beans and mushrooms in balsamic vinegar, and a small avocado.  Just enough food and it was yummy!  I’ve also been drinking sparkling water from my SodaStream which makes drinking water so much easier.  I just love the little bubbles!  I don’t add anything but tap water and it’s awesome.

IMG_8124

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’ve switched mostly to using my smaller plates.  I’m not sure if it’s true but they say you eat less because it looks like more.  One thing is for sure I’m still getting full, or as the book says satisfied, but trying not to overdo it to the point of pain.  I think one or two meals (crack slaw) were to that point last week.  I just feel bad if I don’t eat what I dish up for myself, especially if it’s not enough that I would save it.  I guess that’s one of the things I have to overcome during this Whole30 (or how many ever days I decide to continue this, it’ll be at least 30).

A friend asked me if I missed anything food wise.  I guess the answer really is no.  Other than that one chocolate craving I’ve been good.  I’ll admit that watching someone eat Doritos with that fake cheese smelled so good, and seeing someone drink a beer and I don’t even like beer but it made me want a glass of wine.  But, if I’m not around other foods I really don’t even think of them.  We have a snack machine and soda machine at work that I used to regularly use but I haven’t been tempted to do that either.  I’ve not even been tempted by the frosting-less animal crackers sitting open on the table at work, which I used to eat just because they were there.

If I had to say I miss anything it’s that I miss not having to cook…seriously!  And there weren’t as many dishes to do before either.  Other than that I’m doing great!

Whole30 – Day 3

13 Oct

Day three is done!  I don’t know if I’m having a delayed reaction or what but I’m really not feeling that bad.  I woke up today and didn’t have a headache but I was extremely tired.  The tired feeling remained throughout the day.  The book tells you numerous times that you’ll need extra sleep during this time and I’m finally starting to believe it.  Whatever medical issues I have been having previous to starting Whole30 has left me tired all the time but this is a new level of tired.  It’s like a drained tired.  I can’t wait for that to turn around though!

Breakfast

I wasn’t messing around today!  I didn’t want to be hungry at work all day so I made an extra poached egg for a total of three on top of my wilted spinach (noticing a trend yet?).  I also had part of an avocado, some sunshine sauce, and some of the balsamic sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts.  I was sad because I cut the avocado open and part of it was bad so I cut out the good stuff and just ate that.  The good news is that I made it just fine until lunch with no hunger pangs!

IMG_8057

Lunch

Lunch was a bowl of chicken chowder and some green olives.  Nothing too fancy but it was good and filling.  Easily made it until I was home to eat dinner and again wasn’t hungry.

IMG_8059

Dinner

I finally tried my ground beef and butternut squash stuffed peppers!  They’re good, but not my favorite thing so far.  Obviously variety is good and I’d make them again.  I also had some spaghetti squash topped with sunshine sauce.  I do not recommend this combination.  It wasn’t good at all, but I ate it.  Luckily I’m not a picky eater and I realize I’m eating for a purpose other than pleasure.  I will say this though, my experience so far has been mostly pleasurable.  Other than extra dishes and time spent cooking I’m really enjoying the food and enjoying real food.  And lastly I had a plum!

IMG_8061

Overview of the day: it was a good one!  I don’t feel terrible and I don’t feel amazing.  I didn’t have any crazy cravings.  I’m feeling like my stomach is just as big as it has been but for some reason my skinny jeans that are a size smaller than the ones I wore yesterday are feeling looser than they did.  Maybe they’ve just stretched out with wear or maybe this is actually starting to work!  Only another 27 days until we all find out.  Ooooh the suspense!

I’m already compiling a list of what I’m going to cook next week and I’m excited to try some new things.  I will say this, I should have cooked more meat than I did this week.  The chicken chowder doesn’t seem to have that much meat per serving, certainly doesn’t feel like one to two palm sized portions when I’m eating it, it’s mostly sweet potato.  I like sweet potato but I’d like to stick closer to the plan.  I also made the chicken salad which I can’t eat.  I looked at the can after I made it up and saw there’s corn starch in it.  Seriously?  Corn starch in chicken?  Why???  G won’t eat anything with mayo, not even real home made mayo so I guess I’ll have to throw it out.  What a shame.

WARNING: TMI TIME BELOW

I couldn’t leave you without some TMI today.  My stomach feels a bit bloated and gassy and I’ve eaten so much green that my poop is green.  And no, I didn’t cheat and have one of those black Burger King burgers.  Mine is the real deal, lol.

Juice Fast #2–Day 7

24 Jul

Today, and especially last night at work, I really want food!  I don’t even care what it is.  Still no cravings but everything and anything sounds and looks pretty good.  It didn’t seem to matter how much juice I drank last night I was still hungry.  I’m supposed to be past that point by now (especially since I didn’t have it at the beginning).  Kinda weird to be having willpower issues at the half-way point.  Sticking to it though.

Normally I wouldn’t weigh in today since I don’t actually sleep a full night, but I just took a little nap and stepped on the scale after I got up….same as yesterday 135.4, so that’s promising for some loss tomorrow after I sleep tonight.  Transitioning between nights and days, whether on a juice fast or not, is always difficult because I eat a lot more than usual, simply because I’m awake so many more hours than normal.

I’m also in a pretty crappy mood, but the juice fast doesn’t have much to do with that, although I’m sure it plays a small part.  If I weren’t fasting I’d most likely be searching my cupboards, refrigerator, and freezer for some comfort food.
